In the blue and red versions, before you even start playing you got to know you and your rival's name. Make it anything you want. After, you'll start off with a character called Ash. Go to your CPU and get a potion, then you're ready to go! Greet your mom and get out of your house then go outside. The town you're in is called Pallet Town. Now listen up, go up to the tall grass and a person, called Pro Oak will come and lead you to his lab. Gary, your rival will be waiting there. You'll talk for a while then you could choose your starting pokemon and your rival will choose your weakness. (Y)Bulbasaur-(R)Charmander, (Y)Charmander-(R)Squirtle, and (Y)Squirtle-(R)Bulbasaur. Before you even get out of the lab, you've to battle your rival. If you win, you get $3,000 and gets your pokemon level up to 6.
Now, head straight to a pokemart. He will ask you to go to bring a package to Pro Oak. Go back to his lab. Your rival won't fight you this time, but both of you get something called a pokedex for information, picture, and seen or captured of a pokemon. Get out of the lab and talk to Rival's sister. She will now present you with a town map.
After you get your own virtual pokedex, go back To Viridian City. That was the city that you just encountered or I should say the first pokemart was located there. There are things you can do which are common in each city. These are:
Pokemon Center: To heal all your pokemons with you to full health and active.
The Gyms: You'll have to fight the gym leaders there to earn a badge. When you earn a badge, pokemons may have raised their stats or obey you in a certain kind of level. Your mission is to become a master by going to beat the Pokemon League. To access it, you must have the eight badges from the eight different gyms.
Pokemart:To buy pokeballs to catch pokemons, potions, and other stuff to heal your pokemons on a long journey and lots more!
People: Very common... well, if you're a beginner, talk to them. They give you lots of hints!
Read it all! Now go to the gym. Uh-oh! Someone's blocking the door. To enter the gym, you have to get the 7 badges from the other gyms so go back there when you're finished with it. There will also be a path to your left. That's the way to the Pokemon League. So for now, head straight. The man that was blocking you has finally had some coffee, so now he will let you go. You'll encounter a forest called the Viridian Forest. There are lots of bugs here and trainers so get prepared. Your starting pokemon should be at around lv. 9-10 and you should have a second pokemon around with you at lv. 7-9. If you have a Charmander or/and Pidgey with you, you could kick out the trainers butt. Also, while catching pokemons, try to notice a Pikachu! It is very rare, so you could catch it later in the game.
Exit the Viridian Forest and wait a minute. This doesn't look familiar to you. Of course it doesn't, it's Pewter City! There is a museum to explore, a pokemon center and your first true battle in a gym! The gym leader has rock type of pokemons so use it wisely. His pokemons are Geodude at lv. 12 and Onix at lv. 14. A Butterfree, or any grass and/or water type may defeat it easily. If you chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, you may not have any troubles at all. Once you defeated him, he'll give you TM34 which is bide, gives you money, a badge that's all! Heal back your pokemons then head straight. You will see a museum. Enter it and it'll cost $50 (It costs money but its worth to see!) You will see prehistoric pokemons and learn about more of moon stones and history. Talk to every kind of person and then exit. Now get your potions ready because you're going to have a big surprise when you go into the first cave called Mt. Moon. Before you even enter, you'll fight a few trainers and catch a little bit more pokemon. I suggest going to the pokemon center near the Mt. Moon before you enter Mt. Moon because if you got blackout, you will arrive back at the recent pokemon center.
Inside the Mt. Moon, you'll find out that trainers (usually they have rock type pokemons, get a water or grass type pokemon for a bet), helpful items, Zubats, Geodudes and other pokemons to let you capture them or to level up your pokemons. Later on, you'll fight a person that is near some stones. Fight him and win him, then he will ask you for which stone you want. The Helix stone contains Omanyte, and the Dome stone contains a Kabuto. You have to get it later in the future when you arrive to Cinnabar's Lab. Continue exploring until you see the exit when you arrive to Cerulean City.
Finally, you've reach to the second town called Cerulean City. Like all the other towns, they have everything included. But there's one thing that makes it special. There's a secret cave! But you need the HM 03 which is surf and finish the Elite 4 to enter there. You'll soon find out. Here, you've to fight 5 trainers on a bridge. The bridge is call Nugget Bridge. Before you even fight anyone, go heal up your pokemons because Gary will appear and against you first. Next, fight the five trainers. Congraluations, if you've beaten the five trainers, your prize is a nugget. It costs a lot of money so don't waste it!
Go to your right and fight a few more trainers. After that, phew you've find Bill, a professional in pokemons. But when you arrive at his house, he's a monster! Now calm down, he won't fight you or anything. Do what he says and he will become his oldself. Check out his computer after you turn back him into his oldself, there will be four different kinds of pokemons! There is Eevee, #133 and his/her evolutions Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon.
Get out of the house and prepare yourself for another big fight against the 2nd gym leader, Misty! Misty will use Staryu and Starmie, lv. 19 and lv.21 so have your Bulbasaur or Pikachu at lv. 20. Pikachu's thundershock does great and so as Bulbasaur's vine whip. If you have two of them, it's a 99% win. When you finish, heal your pokemons.
Once you finish up Misty, you'll encounter a police before. She was blocking your way before, but now she shouldn't be. Enter in there and talk to some people. They'll say Robbers (Team Rocket) have broke in to their house. Go out of the house in the exit way and defeat that Team Rocket. Once you defeated him, he will walk away awarding you with a TM called Dig. Dig can help you get out of caves to the recent pokemon center. (I used it on Blastoise and kept it for as long as after getting the key from Cinnbar. It was difficult to exit.) Dig is also a good attack against pokemons that are weak against ground or rock. And a quick note, never use dig on a flying type pokemon. It'll always be unaffected.
Walk down the road until you encounter another town. The city is called Vermilion City. This is the city to fight your third gym leader, Lt. Surge. But the gym is being blocked by a bush. Don't worry, you'll soon get a HM to cut it off. At the top left of the gym, you will see a house. Talk to the president there. If you explored Cerulean City just now, you'll remember a bicycle shop and now expensive it was! Now that you've talk to the president, he will give you a bicycle ticket. Walk back to Cerulean city, go to the bike store and just talk to the storekeeper. Go back to Vermilion City and go to houses and talk to people. One will want you to trade with him with a Farfetch'd. After that, head right and you'll see some kind of place. It's a place where 1-2 sailors are standing. Rumors have said don't go to the ship yet because you could can get Mew. I'm not sure if that is correct, but I tried it once and it didn't work. It's a 80% of not working and 20% of working I guess. Go into the ship which is called S.S Anne. Fight trainers and go to the captain's room. If Gary ever comes down and wants to fight you, you're on the right track. Beat him up and then head straight to the stairs. Talk to the captain. Because of your help, he will award you with a HM 01 which contains Cut, which is used to cut bushes. Get out of the ship and the S.S Anne will leave.
Once you get the HM 01, teach it to a grass pokemon that won't be useful later in the game. Right now, cut may be a strong attack but when you meet those horrifying, strong pokemons, it's weak.
The gym leader is pretty strong, and has the advantage over water so don't get your water pokemons here. If you're using red version, a Machop at lv. 23 or Geodude may be useful. In blue version, getting a Sandscrew may be useful at lv. 23 too or a Machop. You could try using Raticate too. But before you enter, you've got to find the 2 switches under the bins. Each time you get it wrong, the switches switches randomly. Usually, if you find a switch under a bin, the other one should be near. The gates leading to Lt. Surge will open. All your pokemon should be in good condition and all of them should be at lv. 22-24.
If you defeated Lt. Surge, not only you could get a thunder badge, but also TM 24 which is thunderbolt. Later on, you'll be able to use the HM 02 (fly ability) too.
Go back to Viridian City and before, did you notice that going to the forest was blocked by a few bushes. Now that you have HM 01, use it to cut it off! If you explore a little, there will be a Diglett cave and very few Dugtrios in there, and there will be a house containing a human being. It is a scientist asking if you have 10 or more pokemons, if you do, then say yes and he will give you HM 05! Go back to Cerulean city and head east and you'll see a bush. Cut that off and fight trainers. You'll soon see a cave but remember to heal your pokemons first. Getting a few repels may help you to get away annoying pokemons (especially Zubats...)
After, you'll arrive the Lavender Town with creepy music. Heal all your pokemons before you do anymore battling. The cool thing there is that there is a Name Rater to change any of your pokemon names. In the pokemon tower, you won't see any pokemons yet because you could only see them with sliph scope, which you could get it later in the game.
Head left and you'll see trainers. Since Saffron entrances are still closed, you've got to take the underground path to Celadon City and try using an item finder to find a nugget.
Finally, you've reach to Celadon City, the biggest town ever! There is a gaming corner to get pokemons and TM's. Blue version people have to have 6,500 coins to get Porygon while Red version people have to get 9,999 coins to get a Porygon. Different versions have different pokemons to get. Behind a building, (you've got to use cut again) there will be stairs for you to climb up. Continue going up and soon you'll find an Eevee. You could evolve Eevee if you want. If you've checked out Bill's computer, you should have saw the appearance. If you use thunder stone to evolve Eevee into Jolteon, you get an ultra speed pokemon. (My friend got a Jolteon and it was faster than Mewtwo, not kidding!) Or you could evolve Eevee into Vaporeon the mermaid with a water stone, or evolve Eevee with a fire stone into Flareon the strong attacker. You choose. You get to buy the stones in the department store on the 4th floor. Oh yeah, before you even exit the department store, go to the toppest floor. Elevators won't lead to it so walk by stairs. You'll see a drink machine and get all three drinks there is. Give it all to the girl and get rewarded with TMs. Buy another drink and buy the cheapest one for you'll give ONE of the Saffron guards and ALL the Saffron guards will let you get in or out of Saffron City. Under the gaming corner, there is a house. Talk to a man and he will give you a coin case to get coins. If you don't have it, you cant' have coins.
In the gaming corner, you'll see a Team Rocket guy. Talk to it and he will battle you. When you win him, talk to the poster behind him before, There will be a button to press. After go the right. The maze is quite simple. Check out all the floors and get 12 items, battle 10 Team Rocket trainers (including Giovanni, the Team Rocket boss). If you want to battle Giovanni to get the sliph scope, get the key to open the gate guarded by two Team Rockets. Go to the 4th basement and fight a Team Rocket. Talk to him afterwards and he will award you. Before you even confront the evil Giovanni, you may heal your pokemons for safety and have all your pokemons around lv.26-28. Win him and get money + sliph scope.
As I said before, you need the sliph scope to see ghosts. Go back to Lavender Town and go back to the pokemon tower. The ghost will appear to be Gastly and rarely Haunters. Catch them if you can. Cubone will sometimes appear too. Later, before you arrive to the top floor, you'll see a dead ghost which is Marowak. Defeat it (don't capture it) and go up the stairs. You'll see three team rockets and defeat them all. When you defeat them all, Talk to Mr. Fuji and he will say you rescued him. Then he will teleport you to his home. Talk to him afterwards if you want to, but most important is get back out of the house and talk to him again and he will give you the pokeflute.
The pokeflute will be used later in the game to wake up the rare Snorlaxs, or when in battle you could use it to wake all your pokemons. This time, head west and you'll see a guard. Talk to him and you'll automatically give him a drink if you have one for him. He will let you go in to Saffron City.
But oh no, Team Rocket is now guarding lots of places in Saffron. Don't worry about that yet, but first off go to a lower right corner houses and talk to some kind of like fisherman guy. He will give you psychic, one of the most powerful attack. Fight the small gym next to the official gym and defeat the gym leaders there. Then you could choose either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan for your pokemon. To get the other one, trade it with your friend.
Now to the Sliph Co. Heal all your pokemons for the most annoying building ever (sigh). There are 11 floors in the building which may lead you to misfortune or fortune. To make it easy, go to the 5th floor. Get the card key at the bottom of the screen with some easy teleportations. The trick is go into a blocking teleporter, then teleport back, then go down 1 and fight the Team Rocket and then get the key. Now you could open any doors in the building.
When you arrive to the 11th floor, you cannot enter to it but to get there, you must go to the 3rd floor past the 1st door to the left. Your rival or I should say Gary will battle you. After defeating him, get Lapras by talking to the only man there. Get into the other teleporter and then defeat a Team Rocket. Soon, you'll fight Giovanni then talk to the President and you'll be rewarded with a masterball which you could catch any pokemons without damaging it. Use it on the Mewtwo if you don't want to waste it. Next exit out of the building...
At the top left corner of the city, there'll be a girl upstairs of her house. Give her a pokedoll and get back a mimic attack. You can choose one attack from your opponent but when you against your friend, the attack you choose is random. After, heal all your pokemons and get ready for a real battle.
Go to the big gym and keep on teleporting up and down if you don't want to battle anyone. You'll travel to every room. After, you'll arrive to a room which doesn't let you teleport again except teleporting back. Talk to the girl in the final room and that'll be Sabrina. She'll use Kadabra lv.38, Mr Mime. at lv.37, Venomoth at lv.38 and Alakazam at lv.43. Finish her off and get the TM that contains psywave. Psywave is quite like a random attack. Instead of a random attack, it does random damage. Sometimes its a lot, and sometimes its little. Teleport back to get out of the gym. Heal all your pokemons again. Now that we have the pokeflute, we could go on to Fushia City.
Go to Route 12 and fight many fishermans. Upon going to the trail, you'll see a house. Talk to the sailor inside and you'll receive the most powerful rod of all, Super rod. Eventually, you'll encounter a Snorlax. If you can capture it, then good. If you can't, buy an Ultraball later and get the other Snorlax. Later, you'll encounter Route 13.
